All About The SFSC Shop Mural

Writer's picture: SFSCSFSC

What's the story behind the SFSC mural in front of our shop? You may have noticed that over the years the skateboard-as-canvas mural changes designs, but always remains an inviting beacon that can be seen on Divisadero Street as you walk by or as you enter through the gates of our front yard. Most recently, the mural was updated in 2023 in collaboration with local artist, Jackie Brown. We are extremely grateful to Jackie for donating her time and talents to assist EduSkate staff and students in designing and painting this mural. She spent time with us during the Spring Semester of 2023 to teach us about the steps of bringing a design to life in this scale. This mural is reflective of current EduSkate students and was created through a collaborative process of brainstorming, sketching, and painting together. We chose to paint icons that represent the different ideas that come to mind when we think of Skate Club. With Jackie's illustration skills, we were able to transform the ideas for the icons into drawings on paper and eventually into paint on the mural. You'll notice icons such as the SFSC Van, the Iron Chef skull and crossbones with chef's knives to represent out cooking challenges on Tuesdays each week, and a red paper origami swan to represent Thuy Nguyen, Skate Club's co-founder. What else you can you recognize from Skate Club?
